are the spending cuts? it sounds like they are getting close in the talks between vice president joe biden and the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell but there is not a deal until senator mcconnell knows he has enough support. let's take a look at some of the key points of a framework of the deal according to sources close to the talks. it would raise taxes on income tax amounts above $400,000 for individuals, $450,000 for families. it would address the estate tax, the alternative minimum tax, the medicare doc fix and unemployment insurance. current discussions about how best to address the automatic spending cuts that is called sequestration, the automatic cuts to defense, and domestic programs. a short time ago a leading republican expressed a great deal of concern and frustration with the whole process. >> it's december the 31st. january 1st is tomorrow, 2013, taxes go up. everybody agrees it will be disaster for the economy. we can't allow that to happen. we'll ruin the economy. but where we were? where were we for the pass month, and the month before that, and the month before t

that the president and vice president joe biden are calling the four congressional leaders behind closed closed doors today. >> i am hopeful. i wouldn't say i'm optimistic, but i think confidence has gone down. i think the key is whether the speaker will be the speaker of the entire house and let the matters come before us where there could be a majority of democrats and perhaps a majority of republicans, but let es speak our will and act on our will. that's really one of the keys. i think if the senate bill or what was in it were brought before the house, keeping the middle-class tax cuts, but not those for the upper income, and making sure the alternative minimum tax did not go into effect -- i think it would pass with a coalition. and i think the same could be true of unemployment insurance. 2 million people will lose their federal benefits tomorrow, if we don't have. 2 million people. >> when we snowe the fiscal cliff was imposed as a stopgap on you and all of your colleagues on the hill, are you disappointed that you've had to see it come down to the wire like this? this is basically a self-desi

in the second term be spending more time out raising money for other democrats or maybe vice president biden if he decides to run rather than being in the white house doing the work that he was elected to do? caller: i believe if a president -- if president obama is out there campaigning, he's doing it for the american people, simple as that. guest: the caller hit some important point. campaigning is very much a means to an end. presidents don't capability -- campaign cause they don't do their job. they believe it will help them do their job more effective. and campaigning, a president with a second term can get closer to that more perfect union. they're in a stronger position to intact his priorities. so it's certainly the case that campaigning is part of the process. and if hamilton were here today, who knows what he would say but perhaps he could echo the sentments that he would keep the presidents in closer touch with the people. one thing is spending too much time in a white house or being out of touch with the people so when presidents are taking their case to the people, you could arg
